European Championship for Garden Cress
(Lepidium sativum)
Nature usually does not take much notice of national borders but at a time when populists emphasize our nationalistic feelings, and national borders are often questioned (fe. when it comes to refugees), it is time for a challenge. Ho big are the differences in quality, vigor and power between sprouts of Lepidium sativum from the various countries of Europe?
The Museum of the Plant
The ‘European Garden Cress Championship’ is part of Anne Geene’s Museum of the Plant. A curiosity cabinet of photographs and objects addressing different aspects of plants. Regular institutions concerning plants and plant science usually restrict themselves to biological aspects and particularities of plants. They show rare species, collect DNA and aim to educate the public. My (fictitious and absurd) museum points to everything else. It focuses on coincidence rather than certainty or repeatability, on their place in human society rather than their own habitats and on the transformation of organisms into museum objects. As an artist I discover, collect and file information and observations of today and in history. The findings are exhibited during various shows with an ever growing collection.
